Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, in his capacity as President of the ruling Frelimo Party, on Monday stressed that he will continue to support the country’s young people, but he urged them to be “more pro-active” in order to stimulate the development of Mozambique.
Young Mozambicans who began the national liberation war against Portuguese colonial rule on 25 September 1964 “made sacrifices to bring independence and human dignity”, stressed Nyusi, and the following generation defended the gains of independence.
“It is up to the youth of today to continue actions that seek to attain sustainable development”, he added.
Nyusi was speaking in the western city of Tete at the opening session of a meeting of the Central Committee of the Mozambique Youth Organisation (OJM), which is one of the social organisations affiliated to Frelimo. This follows the first joint meeting of all Frelimo’s social organisations, held in Tete over the weekend.
Nyusi said the government is banking on the country’s youth for its development activities, and he warned young people not to let themselves be manipulated by forces opposed to Mozambican development.
He added it was imperative that the OJM meeting draw up strategies to guarantee a Frelimo victory in the municipal elections scheduled for 10 October. He wanted the OJM leadership to emerge from the Tete meeting “more united, more cohesive and more determined to advance to the next battles”.
“The OJM should continue to be a binding, unifying organisation”, Nyusi added, “a prestigious organisation that inspires greater confidence among young people”.
“The OJM should be where youths are, in the characteristic entertainment activities of young people, but also in the production of knowledge and the transformation our wealth for the good of all Mozambicans”, he declared. “We should recognise that young people are the main agents of change and the drivers of development”.
Nyusi said that young people are carrying out “extraordinary work”, both for Frelimo and for the development of the country. “We will never find the words to recognise the selfless work of young people at all levels, and so we shall continue to bank on youth”.
The government, he continued has been putting young people into leadership positions, and “Mozambique stands out in this regard, unlike other African countries”.
“We have many young people in governance, exercising senior positions, which is different from other countries in Africa”, he said. “We do this, because youth is the sap of the nation”.
For his part, the OJM general secretary, Mety Gondola, promised that the OJM will support all 53 Frelimo mayoral candidates in the municipal elections scheduled for 10 October.
“We feel that we are the vanguard for the development of Mozambique, since we are deserving of the trust of the government which puts us into leadership positions”, added Gondola.
