Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Saturday challenged farmers in the central province of Zambezia to develop livestock farming, particularly poultry breeding, given the excellent conditions that the province possesses.
Speaking at a press conference in the town of Lugela, at the end of a three day visit to Zambezia, Nyusi said that the province could become a reference point for livestock farming, since it already has all the raw materials needed. The abundance of navigable rivers was also a plus.
“The recommendation I am leaving is for the development of livestock farming”, he said. “We believe it is possible, particularly for poultry, just as we are banking on growing vegetables which is also solving many problems”.
Throughout his visit, Nyusi had stressed the importance of increasing agricultural production and boosting food security. He found the response of the province highly positive, expressed in an abundance of crops, when compared with what he had seen in previous years.
Zambezia, he said, “is stable, it’s growing and it is managing its macro-economic situation. It has a major participation in the chessboard of the country’s priorities”.
He hoped that the province was now beginning to prepare the 2017/18 agricultural year, which will be officially launched in October.
The abundant production from this year’s harvest, he noted, meant that farmers are looking for markets for their surplus crops. He suggested that nobody should panic over this, and the solution lies in ensuring regularity in production, in terms of both quantity and quality, so that the crops produced in Zambezia are competitive.
The President noted that national production of animal feed still depends on imports of maize, soya and sesame – but the companies producing the feed should be seen as a market for farmers with a surplus, as in Zambezia.
High levels of agricultural production, he said, open the space for making new agreements between producers and agro-industrial concerns.
