Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Sunday asked the country’s various religious bodies to help him keep the promises he made to promote unity, solidarity, cohesion and social equity among citizens, and democracy peace and sovereignty in the country.
Nyusi was addressing the Libombos diocese of the Anglican Church in particular, speaking at a Thanksgiving service in Maputo held to mark the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the Anglican Church in Mozambique.
The service was held under the motto “Sowing faith, love and peace”. Nyusi declared that these words clearly refer to the promotion of fundamental values for the construction of a worthier and more human life, where the well-being of each Mozambican prevails.
He recalled that the Anglican Church in Mozambique was founded in 1893 by Mozambican migrants who brought the religion back with them from South Africa. The Church had built its own identity not only through raising the spiritual faith of its members, but also through contributing to social causes, including the government’s current efforts to establish effective peace.
“We encourage you to continue on this path”, Nyusi said, “and to collaborate in the efforts we have been making to consolidate national unity, to strengthen the spirit of hard work, and the opening to peace and reconciliation among Mozambicans”.
Nyusi added that he recognises the role played by the churches in creating the conditions for social welfare and for the progress and development of the country. He regarded the churches as “partners in building a prosperous and peaceful Mozambique”.
The ceremony was also attended by Nyusi’s predecessor, Armando Guebuza, and his wife Maria da Luz Guebuza.
Hundreds of Anglican believers, priests, deacons, sub-deacons and bishops were present, led by the diocesan bishop, Carlos Matsinhe.
