The presidents of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, consider the state of cooperation between the two countries to be fruitful and continuing.
Presidents Nyusi and Jinping made this assessment during the bilateral meeting at the Great Palace of the People’s House in Beijing yesterday.
On the occasion, President Nyusi reiterated Mozambique’s commitment to maintaining good relations with China in the multilateral context and on issues of common interest, and welcomed President Xi Jinping’s efforts in the search for fairer and more balanced international systems, highlighting as examples initiatives in development, global security, the Belt and Road Initiative and artificial intelligence (AI).
He added that Mozambique stands in solidarity with and supports China against unfounded accusations, such as alleged human rights violations, on its policy towards Africa and against systematic attempts to isolate the country economically.
He took the opportunity to congratulate his Chinese counterpart on his vision and constructive thinking aimed at qualitative development for China’s modernization and rejuvenation.
“We congratulate China on eradicating poverty, successfully holding the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, which made the historic decision to deepen reform and opening up. We reaffirm our firm and consistent support for the principle of one China across the Taiwan Strait and one country, two systems, which is being successfully implemented,” President Nyusi said.
In turn, Xi Jinping said that, since Nyusi took office as head of the Mozambican state, the country had achieved important development successes, adding that, despite elections in October, Nyusi had travelled to China, showing that he attaches great significance to China-Mozambique and China-Africa relations.
“China and Mozambique are true friends and brothers who move forward together in good times and bad. In recent years, we have held several meetings and reached important consensuses,” he concluded.
China is on the list of the ten largest investors in Mozambique, with project proposals worth US$1.4 billion from 2019 to the first half of 2024.
Filipe Nyusi is scheduled to speak today on a 9th China-Africa Cooperation Summit panel discussing “Peace and Security”.
