According to a press release issued on Tuesday night by the Presidency of the Republic, the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, has met Renamo leader Ossufo Momade in Maputo, and they have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the Maputo Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement is fully implemented.
The two leaders agreed that the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process will be resumed in the next few weeks, with the aim of closing the five remaining Renamo bases and creating the necessary conditions for the remaining guerrillas to return to their homes.
As has been the case to date, the Military Affairs Commission and the Joint Technical Groups for DDR and Monitoring and Verification will guide activities on the ground.
Both President Nyusi and Ossufo Momade expressed complete confidence in their ability to work together in a coordinated manner, united by a common vision of peace for all.
During the meeting, the leaders further acknowledged the support they had received from partners in the diplomatic, development and private sector areas, which had contributed to recent progress in the reintegration process. They recognised the need for support from all stakeholders in the country to ensure that the reintegration process reaches all DDR beneficiaries.
At the same time, and recognising that this is a central component for a sustainable reintegration that will contribute to national reconciliation efforts, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to create a joint working group to study the matter of pensions for those eligible, without prejudice to previous processes.
Furthermore, both leaders agreed that dialogue remains the only line of action to overcome differences, and expressed their satisfaction with the culture of peace that many regions of the country are now experiencing.
