On November 1 of last year, the government wound up the Institute for Export Promotion (IPEX) with the promise that some officials would be reinstated in other state institutions. Among those is IPEX’s former chairman João Macaringue, who was sworn in as director general of the Mozambican Institute of Cereals by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário on Thursday.
Macaringue replaces Sidónio dos Santos in his new job, with responsibility for regulating and promoting agricultural production and marketing at a time when the country faces the challenge of increasing production and ending hunger. In fact, the prime minister demanded coordinated effort to create a food reserve capable of filling the national deficit. “The Mozambican Grain Institute, an agricultural marketing agent, must monitor the production chain from the purchase, storage and conservation to the sale of agricultural products,” Agostinho do Rosario said.
In addition to Macaringue, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário also swore in Arsénio Sarmento as director general of the Sports Promotion Fund, replacing Adamo Bacar. Sarmento is charged with mobilizing funds for the promotion of sport and construction of sports infrastructure.
The prime minister also swore in Geraldo Albasini as deputy director general of the National Institute for Quality Standardization, where he will assist Alfredo Sitoe in certifying the quality of products sold to consumers.
The nominees promised to do their utmost to honour missions entrusted to them.
“We’re leaving one challenge and taking up another. What matters is that we adapt existing tools to what we want. Let’s go. What is wanted is work,” said João Macaringue, one of the appointees.
