Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday once again expressed his willingness to meet with Afonso Dhlakama, leader of Renamo to discuss the establishment of a lasting peace in Mozambique.
Speaking to members of the government, who had come to greet him on the occasion of his 57th birthday, Nyusi said that “nothing is impossible” when the issue at stake is guaranteeing peace and stability in Mozambique.
He added that any dialogue with the Renamo leader would have to obey Mozambican law so that any decision reached could be implemented.
“I hope that the Renamo leadership understands that there is nothing impossible about solving the problem of peace, particularly when the discussions are held within the rules, obeying the law”, said Nyusi. “All of us, political parties and Mozambicans in general, should be committed to peace”.
Nyusi added that he is awaiting a response from the British Minister of International Development, Nicholas Hurd, who promised to contact Dhlakama and urge him to meet with the President.
“I met with the British Minister yesterday and he promised that he would speak with the Renamo leader. I hope he succeeded”, said Nyusi.
Hurd’s tight schedule during his two day visit to Mozambique did not allow him to fly to Sofala province to meet Dhlakama in his bush hideout in Gorongosa district. But he did speak to Dhlakama on Monday by phone. At a Tuesday press conference at Maputo airport, immediately prior to his departure, he said he had told both Nyusi and Dhlakama that “Mozambique needs political stability and reconciliation, instead of violence and war”.
Nyusi said he regarded his birthday as an opportunity to reflect upon what has been done and what should be done for the development of Mozambique. He believed he was surrounded by “the best professionals, the best sons and daughters of Mozambique, people who are committed to the cause of the nation”, and as a result he felt secure in the steps he was taking.
He pledged he would do all in his power to ensure improved living standards. “Where today we have five villages with clean water, we cannot end 2016 with that same number”, said. “The same is true for energy, education, health and all sectors which guarantee social development”.
The best birthday present he could receive from members of the government, he added, “is your pledge to fulfill the mission you have been given by the people”.
One sector stood out as deserving special attention, said Nyusi, and that was food production. The great challenge, he insisted, was to ensure that sufficient food is available for all Mozambicans.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, praised the “patriotism, comradeship and dynamism” of Nyusi, and his “hard work in the promotion of peace and stability”.
Government members, he pledged, were prepared to do all in their power in pursuit of development and the maintenance of peace.
