“No. We have a lot to carry.” The president’s words indicated that he no longer felt the joy he showed when he was received with dances and songs on his arrival at the ministry.
Minister Silva Dunduro received the president on his visit to the ministry yesterday, guiding him round the various departments as he learned about its functioning. He heard explanations about the role of cultural and creative industries, and inspected some of the institution’s books, recordings and handbooks.
Nyusi visited the various departments from culture to tourism at 10 de Novembro Avenue, and heard about programmes developed to promote tourism, a sector that in 2015 contributed about 2.5 percent to the national economy.
Finally, the president directed the Extraordinary Consultative Council of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, where he expressed his misgivings.
“Do not make culture and tourism the government’s burden. We have a lot to carry. We want to find solutions to the calamities, build bridges, roads. Help someone who has (something)? No. It is a Ministry that has and should not be borne by anyone,” Nyusi warned.
The president reminded those who run the culture and tourism sector that are not there just to take office, because “anyone can take office. But to assume [office] means to understand the mission and to exercise. You have no other authorization if you do not make a difference”.
Nyusi invited the institution to become sustainable. For the president, it is not justifiable that, among the diverse tourist resources in the country, the culture and tourism sector cannot bring about satisfactory gains.
Nyusi says leaders should get closer to the makers of culture.
But there were not only complaints. There was advice as well. Or rather, lessons for Dunduro on how to run a sector such as culture and tourism. Nyusi said that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism should get closer to the makers of culture in order to encourage them to develop the Mozambican cultural mosaic.
The president said that the work being carried out by the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) should be the responsibility of the Dunduro ministry. “The work being done by the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities is your job,” Nyusi said.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is the fourth to be visited by the president after the Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security, Public Works, Water Resources and Housing and Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy.
