Norway to disburse US$6 million for Maputo thermal power station

Norway will provide 49 million crowns (about six million US dollars) as its contribution to the rehabilitation and expansion of the Maputo thermal power station.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister, Borge Brende, who is on a two day visit to Mozambique visited the premises of the power station on Sunday.

According to the coordinator of the project, Joao Manuel, when complete the station will have a capacity in excess of 300 megawatts. The total funding required, he said, is six million euros (about 6.6 million dollars).

At the end of his visit, Brende said “energy is the basis for the development of any country”, and pledged that Norway intends to be a partner of Mozambique for the long term.

Brende also met with civil society activists, including former Education Minister Graca Machel, who is now the chairperson of the Community Development Foundation (FDC).

“We want to gather the experience of Norway about how they were able to bring together all the pillars of society, State, private business, the diversity of social organization, to build what I call a social pact, in which they work together to build a society of social justice”, said Machel.

Brende said that Norway wants to expand its cooperation with Mozambique to other areas of interest, including education.

“This visit is happening at an important moment for your country”, he said. “I am here to confirm the continuation of our partnership, and I hope that Mozambique remains on the path of development”.
