Mozambique: Assa Matusse in Maputo concert with Mingas and Tabasily

The gates to the second edition of Guitar Nights at the Eduardo Mondlane University Campus in Maputo will open at 6:30 pm next Friday and will hopefully accommodate the 4,000 people the promoter of the event, BDQ Concerts is expecting.
Once again, the plastic arts will be putting in an appearance with eight screens called Symphonies II, painted by P. Mourana and presenting an attempt to bring sound to the canvas, capturing a sonority to activate the imagination.
One and a half hours after the gates open, Albino Mbié will go on stage for 45 minutes, just the time required for the Mozambican musician, who lives in the United States, to play his Mozambican Dance, the title of his debut album. This will be a special event for Mbié: he will have the opportunity to perform with his eternal teachers: Jimmy Dludlu and Richard Bona – who will be on stage at 9:00 p.m.
Albino Mbié is the youngest musician invited to Guitar Nights, and not by chance. As Belmiro Quive explains: “We think that because of the talent that Albino Mbié has, and the desire to make good music, this is the right time to bring him, in an event that will fulfill his dream of playing with Jimmy Dludlu and Richard Bona in his own country. We think of youth, and Albino’s dream to play with his teachers.” Mbié will be accompanied by three members of his band from the United States.
This is the second time BDQ Concerts has brought Cameroonian Richard Bona to the country. The first was in December 2014, since when Bona has always wanted to return. “Richard Bona invited me to visit him abroad and expressed his desire to return to perform in Mozambique. He is very happy about coming back to Maputo,” Quive explains.
Bona will play until 10:00 p.m., and will be followed by Ernie Smith, no newcomer to the country, although this is his Moments of Jazz debut. Only after the South African guitarist has performed, at about 23:30 p.m., will it be Jimmy Dludlu’s turn.
But even this will not be the end. As with the first Guitar Nights concert, where Norman Brown played with Jimmy Dludlu, on Monday, the four musicians will play a theme together, at the end of the show, around 00:30 p.m. The whole show will therefore last about four and a half hours.
BDQ’s commitment to Guitar Nights under Belmiro Quive is a new concept. The organization felt inspired to return with a second edition after the popularity of the first one, in which, as in this one, national artists get a chance to play with overseas performers.
So far, three thousand tickets have already been sold, and Jimmy Dludlu is the only musician to be seen in both editions of Guitar Nights.
Guitar symphonies with plastic arts
With eight screens, artist P. Mourana is exhibiting at Guitar Nights for the second time. The works have been painted since September last year and replicate in a way what was done for Billy Ocean’s show, but all the canvasses are new and were painted exclusively for this event.
“For me, it is a great challenge to be in Guitar Nights. People are buying tickets to listen to music, but I have a responsibility to draw the public’s attention to the fine arts. For this exhibition, I’ve created more aggressive works, with more information and a new theme, because we should not be stagnant. This is, for me, a great challenge, to which I draw traits that will characterize the exhibition ‘Science and Transcendence’, which will take place in November as part of the biennial ‘Science and Consciousness’ project,” Mourana explains.
