Speaking during the company’s 40th anniversary celebrations in June of last year, Chairman of the Board of Directors Paulo Muxanga left no doubt that the new Cahora Bassa North power plant was a priority power generation project.
Today, however, there is a change of plan. The North Plant project will now have to await the ongoing evaluation of other projects, including the floating power plant that is being introduced in Nacala to produce additional energy for domestic consumption and export to Zambia.
Speaking exclusively to ‘O País’, Paulo Muxanga revealed that the project had not been abandoned, but that the government was evaluating all projects to select which best deserved investment.
“We put a lot of confidence in the HCB Central Plan, but you have to assess, at any point, which is the best bet. For example, we are now talking about the floating power generating plant in Nacala. There are other projects such as Mpanda Nkuwa, Boroma, and others. So at the moment the government is assessing which project we should back. But there is no doubt that the North Plant is one of the candidates as an investment worth making.”
