Mozambique: Sasol delivers new school block in Inhassoro

The Manica province failed its school enrolment targets for this school year. Government numbers show only 51,683 students enrolled, around only half the expected. The most affected school levels are the 1st, 6th, 8th and 11th grades. These children are now deemed to be children at risk.
The bulk of the estimated 25,508 children who failed to enrol, are the young ones who were to register for grade 1. The failure to register was because parents and guardians preferred to take them along to prepare the land on their ‘machambas’.
It is estimated that 91,038 students should have enrolled in grade 1, but only 65,530 children were registered.
The provincial director of the sector, Estevao Rupela, stated that the failure to enrol children was because their labour was needed for family food production according to a report by the Mozambique News Agency (AIM).
