The agents of the Municipal Police of Maputo who, about two weeks ago, attacked a young man in the city, remain unpunished and in full exercise of their activities, the Municipal Police Command has itself confirmed, while declining an interview.
The amateur video that circulated two weeks ago showing Municipal Police officers dragging and assaulting a helpless young man shocked Mozambican society.
The Municipal Police commander acknowledged at the time that there had been “excess of zeal” on the part of his agents. He publicly apologized and told ‘O País’ that the agents involved had been suspended and would be subject to disciplinary proceedings.
“A process to hold the agents accountable is already in train,” he said.
Mayor of Maputo Eneas Comiche later confirmed that action was underway to hold the agents accountable, adding his regrets regarding the situation.
“We acknowledge that this behaviour is not desirable. The Municipal Police is there to serve, guaranteeing the fulfilment of municipal policies, not behaving this way,” Comiche said.
But the police agents involved continue to work normally and have not been subjected to any proceedings or sanction.
