Mozambique: UEM awards posthumous honorary doctorate to Samora Machel
Gunmen of the Mozambican rebel movement Renamo on Wednesday attacked a convoy of vehicles on the stretch of the main north-south highway between the Save River and the small town of Muxungue.
According to travellers cited in Thursday’s issue of the Maputo daily ‘Noticias’, the Renamo ambush began at about 16.30, and the shooting lasted for half an hour. The convoy was heading northwards from the Save, and consisted of about 150 vehicles.
Although the convoys on this stretch of road are protected by the Mozambican defence and security forces, there is never any guarantee against ambush. On this occasion, nobody was killed or injured, but a bus owned by the company Nagi Investments suffered heavy damage.
On Tuesday, according to the spokesperson for the Mozambican police in the central province of Zambezia, Jacinto Felix, cited by the independent television station STV, the defence and security forces stormed a Renamo base at Morotone, in Mocuba district.
The defence forces attacked at 07.00, and met with no resistance. They thus overran the Morrotone base without firing a shot. Felix said they were now pursuing the retreating Renamo gunmen.
