Political and military instability is doing nothing to deter German investors in Mozambique, judging by their numbers at FACIM 2016. From companies that produce heavy machinery for the mining industry, to household materials and consultants willing to invest in Mozambique, they are here in strength.
Gauff Engineering consulting company has been in Mozambique since 2013, when the country first began to experience instability. For Deputy Director Guiherme Luiz, “it is clear that instability exists, it is real, we see it every day, But Gauff has invested and will continue to invest because we believe in the development of the country. We want to help and we are making a contribution,” he says.
The company is currently overseeing the construction of the Maputo-Katembe bridge and a dam in Cabo Delgado. “Gauff was appointed by the government to develop the dam, which will supply water to the city of Pemba,” Luiz says.
The ice business cometh
Another German company exhibiting its products at FACIM is Higel, which makes machines that produce ice flakes. Undaunted by any political and military instability, company representative Leonardo Cuna says that Higel is preparing to import more machines to Mozambique.
“We are making arrangements for these machines to be assembled in Mozambique in the future. We will not assemble machines and provide them without granting services. For us it is very important that any consumer who is purchasing one of these machines can count on technical assistance,” Cuna says.
Higel has already contacted other companies in Mozambique with a view to expanding its business. Cuna believes the country need the machines, for example for the storage of fresh products. “The advantage of this machine is that it is very ecological. The ice that it produces lasts a long time. It can be used on fishing vessels – the machines can even use salt water,” Cuna explains
The German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy and the German Association for Foreign Trade with Africa, Afrika-Verein, have once again supported FACIM with an official German pavilion.
The 52nd edition of FACIM, with 2,250 Mozambican and 630 foreign companies from 33 countries, is being held in Marracuene on the outskirts of Maputo and runs until Sunday.
