Total’s President for Exploration and Production, Arnaud Breuilliac, visited Mozambique last week in contravention of State of Emergency Covid-19 prevention rules. The French oil company is responsible for spreading the new coronavirus in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Maputo.
Article 4 of Presidential Decree 51/2020 of 1 July stipulates that: “All persons arriving in the country are subject to the mandatory home quarantine regime of 14 to 21 consecutive days”.
But Arnaud Breuilliac, accompanied by other foreigners, landed at Mavalane International Airport on Friday (03) in a private plane from Paris, the capital of a country that has more than 195,000 Covid-19 cases and about 30,000 deaths.
Breuilliac and his entourage were not subjected to any testing by the Mozambican health authorities, and left the airport to meet employees of the natural gas extraction consortium and members of Filipe Nyusi’s government before giving a press conference.
It will be remembered that Total is responsible for the second wave of coronavirus infections in Mozambique, which infected close to a hundred of its workers at the Afungi facilities and spread to Pemba and Maputo cities, Matola and Palma district.
