Not a single case of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus first discovered in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has yet been detected in Mozambique, but, as a precautionary measure, 800 people have been placed in quarantine, according to Health Minister Armindo Tiago.
Speaking on Friday, in the central city of Chimoio, Tiago said no cases of the disease have been diagnosed. “I want to clarify here and now that the reports circulating about cases of coronavrus in our country are false”, he declared. “There is tight control at the points of entry to the country, so that we can identify any case of the disease”.
Since January around 24,000 people have been screened on entering the country, 800 of whom were recommended for quarantine. That did not mean they were carrying the disease, merely that they had been isolated for further checks on their state of health. None of them have been confirmed to be carrying the coronavirus.
“They don’t have the disease”, said Tiago. “Right now we have some national and foreign citizens in quarantine. These are people who travelled from countries where cases of the disease have been recorded”.
After a visit to the Manica Provincial Hospital in Chimoio, Tiago said he was pleased at the way staff have made an effort to provide better health care to the public.
He acknowledged problems concerning a shortage of equipment, particularly for the intensive care service, but pledged that the Health Ministry will allocate more resources to the provincial hospital “within days”.
