President Filipe Nyusi will open the ninth National Culture Festival on the Ferroviário da Beira sports field in Beira on Wednesday as part of his working visit to Sofala province.
The first day will see a traditional ceremony with prayers, speeches and a display by Aruângua ballet. The event, co-hosted by the cities of Beira and Dondo, will last for five days.
Festival deputy director Roberto Dove said that all the provincial delegations and guests were already in Beira for the event, the first Sofala has hosted since its inauguration in 1978.
Dove said 1,500 artists will participate in the opening ballet, which portrays the history of the region from the arrival of the Arabs and the beginnings of trade, the Portuguese and the colonial era, and finally the national liberation struggle and the achievement of independence.
The festival, subtitled “Celebrating Cultural Diversity for the Promotion of Peace and Development”, will involve performances by more than 3,500 artists before ending on Sunday.
