On Wednesday 6 September, nine young Mozambicans received their credentials to travel to the United Kingdom and acquire master’s degrees at some of the most prestigious universities in the world through the Chevening Scholarship.
The group of students includes young people from the provinces of Maputo, Niassa and Cabo Delgado, spread across different courses in the areas of Education and Development, Health, Human Rights, Public Policy, Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Conflict Studies. These young professionals underwent a careful selection process, in which a jury of experts in the UK and Mozambique assessed their leadership potential and clarity about their professional development.
During the farewell ceremony, the UK High Commissioner in Mozambique Helen Lewis left her words of congratulations to the group:
“Today we are welcoming 12 newly graduated Chevening scholarship holders and saying goodbye to another 9 great professionals who will be obtaining a master’s degree in the UK. They represent the enthusiasm, passion and dynamism of Mozambican youth and will continue to strengthen the historic partnership between Mozambique and the UK in the fields of diplomacy, trade and development.”
These nine young people join hundreds of success stories of Mozambicans who have had access to the best universities in the UK and the world to enhance their academic and professional experience. In 40 years, the UK, through the Chevening scholarship, has received more than 300 Mozambican students to obtain fully funded master’s degrees, directly contributing to their country’s development.
“Chevening is a unique opportunity in the professional and academic development journey of young people from all over the world. The community Chevening alumnus is growing and we want to continue to be able to inspire more professionals in different fields to choose Chevening and enjoy all the benefits of this scholarship.” – Frederico Chilengue, President of the Chevening Alumni Association in Mozambique.
