A mandatory 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. curfew has been declared in Mocimboa da Praia village, Cabo Delgado province, with a complete ban on pedestrian and vehicular traffic, O País reports today.
A communiqué from Mocimboa da Praia municipal council dated January 25 announces that the curfew comes in response to the wave of the armed attacks which have resulted in more than 100 deaths and the torching of hundreds of houses in the north of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
After a meeting that brought together local residents and the Defence and Security Forces, the municipality decreed that “the circulation of heavy or light vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians is prohibited, as well as the exercise of any commercial activity, film projection, discotheques in the municipal radius, in the period from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.”.
The curfew has been in effect since Saturday and is justified by suspicions that insurgents may be circulating through the village at night, the mayor of Mocimboa da Praia told STV.
The curfew comes into effect few days before the beginning of the 2019 academic year, but Mocimboa da Praia mayor Fernando Neves promises that the interests of students attending night classes at night will be safeguarded.
The wave of armed attacks in the north of Cabo Delgado began in the early hours of October 5, 2017, when a group of unidentified individuals attacked the district police command in the village of Mocimboa da Praia.
