Terrorists claim deaths of 11 Mozambican soldiers - AIM
Mozambican police have arrested a Nigerian citizen about to send 1.7 kilograms of heroin to Australia hidden inside a box of clothes, the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced on Wednesday.
The drug, hidden in one side of a box of clothes, was to be sent via a travel agency, SERNIC spokesman in Maputo, Hilário Lole, told media.
“This result is the corollary of steps taken by SERNIC to dismantle this transnational organised crime network, which operates using fictitious data including names and phone numbers,” Lole said.
Mozambican authorities on Monday announced the arrest of another Nigerian citizen, for alleged involvement in the trafficking of eight kilograms of cocaine.
Mozambique is seen by some international criminal organisations as a preferred drug trafficking corridor.
The United Nations Office for Drugs and Organised Crime (UNODC) in Mozambique warned last year that the authorities in Kenya and Tanzania had stepped up surveillance, pushing traffickers southwards towards the Mozambican coast.
