Conflicts between Mozambican and Malawian fishermen in Mecanhelas district, Niassa province, over the exploitation of fishing resources in Lakes Amaramba, Chiúta and Chirua, have been brought under control.
Thanks to the strengthening of inspection actions and regular meetings between district authorities in Mecanhelas district, Mozambique, and in Machinga, Malawi, encroachments into Mozambican territorial waters by Malawian fishermen have been reduced.
The administrator of Mecanhelas district, José Achida, said that the local government had also reinforced measures to reduce the number of those illegally entering and leaving the country.
José Achida now considers the movement of people and goods between Mechanhelas (in Mozambique) and Machinga (in Malawi) to be in order.
