In Niassa province, more than 120,000 tons of maize from the last harvest has not yet been sold, due to lack of demand.
Of the 200,000 tons of the crop covered by the marketing plan, only 80,000 tonnes were sold.
The provincial director of Industry and Commerce in Niassa, Fidel Salamandane, said this was due to the fall in the price of maize and the low quality of the maize grain produced in Niassa province.
“This is a dilemma we have. Generally, players in the market were initially going to buy our maize, but they have instead preferred to go outside to buy it – even outside the country altogether,” Salamandane said.
