The Marrupa substation in Niassa province and the associated 250-km high-voltage line will be ready by July, the local government says. The energy will boost industrial growth in that part of the country, which is rich in mineral resources such as gold, limestone and precious and semi-precious stones.
The headquarters of Marrupa district is 300 km from Lichinga, the capital of Niassa province, and until now has been supplied via a 400-km power line from the city of Cuamba, leading to poor supply quality and frequent outages.
The solution for Marrupa lies in the completion of the substation and a new 240-km transmission line, work on which started at the end of last year and is scheduled for completion in July.
The Marrupa substation and the Cuamba power line are capable of supplying energy not only to domestic customers but also to industry, and the project is seen as crucial to attracting investment to Niassa, the least industrialised province in the country.
The goal of universal access to electricity by 2030 has prompted the government to accelerate national energy production and distribution projects. This year, 330,000 new connections are planned, a figure that is expected to reach 500,000 next year.
Currently, it is estimated that only 30 percent of the population has access to electricity from the national grid in Mozambique.
