The Secretary of State for Niassa on Friday called on local authorities to be vigilant regarding displaced persons fleeing armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, warning of possible infiltrators among them.
“You have to pay a lot of attention, and you have to be very careful. Lots of vigilance,” Dinis Vilanculos told a meeting of community leaders in Niassa, the province neighbouring Cabo Delgado.
According to official figures, the province of Niassa has seen at least 166 people fleeing armed violence in Cabo Delgado, in a group composed mainly of women and children.
“Where are these ladies’ husbands? We must be very careful, because the insurgents may have sent their women and children to come and hide here [in Niassa] so that they can continue [to fight] in the forest in Cabo Delgado,” Vilanculos said.
Cabo Delgado has been the scene of armed attacks since October 2017, which, according to the United Nations, have forced 250,000 people to flee from districts in the north of the province.
The provincial capital, Pemba, has been the main refuge for people seeking shelter and safety in Cabo Delgado, but some have escaped to other places, including the neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Nampula.
The armed conflict in Cabo Delgado has already killed at least 1,000 people, with some of the actions claimed by the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group.
