The leader of the Military Junta, Mariano Nhongo, has told Jornal Evidências that he had rejected an offer of US$4 million by the representative of the United Nations Secretary General, Mirko Manzoni, to surrender, dismantle the group he leads and join the Disarmament , Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process.
“If I were worried about money, I would have invaded local commercial sectors, even mining activities that exist here, which move large amounts of money, but we have objectives, as Renamo,” said Nhongo, adding that he had recently renewed contact with Manzoni, only to again be frustrated.
ʺLast week, he contacted me asking what I wanted to join the DDR, and I said that my condition for membership was the creation of a joint team of government and Military Junta representatives, for the discussion of the document sent to the President of the Republic,” Nhongo said.
The Military Junta leader also highlighted weaknesses in the DDR process, citing delays in the payment of pensions. “I had already called attention to the lack of seriousness in this process. Our colleagues were duped into joining the DDR process for money, but I’m concerned with Renamo, not money.”
