The African Development Bank (AfDB) is financing the construction of a bridge over the Metuchira river in Nhamatanda district, Sofala province.
The bridge, valued at US$1,210,000, will be 180 metres long, with a load capacity of 30 tons.
The Governor of Sofala province, Lourenço Ferreira Bulha, who laid the first stone on Friday, said that the construction of the infrastructure was part of post-cyclone recovery.
The bridge will facilitate the flow of products from production areas in three locations to the province’s large markets, improving commercial exchange and the transit of people and goods and boosting the flow of agricultural produce from Metuchira, Bebedo and Nhampoca to the district headquarters town of Nhamatanda and the city of Beira.
Some 104,000 people are expected to benefit from the infrastructure.
After visiting the construction site, Governor Bulha addressed the population, urging them to combine their efforts at the level of communities and local structures, so that the work could proceed normally. He also cautioned the contractor to comply with the terms of the contract and comply with the relevant deadlines.
