NGO accuses police officers of killing young man “who did not represent any danger”

The non-governmental organisation Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) yesterday accused the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) of murdering a young man “who did not represent any danger” in Maputo, demanding the accountability of the agents allegedly involved.

The incident took place on Friday, in Bairro 3 de Fevereiro, on the outskirts of Maputo, when a 37-year-old man driving erratically disobeyed a police order to stop and was shot by the group of agents who intercepted him, according to a statement from the CDD.

“According to the people who were at the scene, the police ordered him to get out of the car, so much so that when I arrived to identify the body there was an open door. When he opened the door to go down, an agent appeared, who thought he owned the world because he was carrying a gun, and shot him. He shot him twice in the head, without any explanation,” said a family source quoted by the newspaper ‘O País’ on Friday.

For the CDD, this is yet another case of violation of the right to life by agents whose job it is to guarantee the safety of citizens.

“The CDD demands the accountability of the agents involved in the murder of the young man last Friday in Maputo. The State must assume its responsibility in the case, paying fair compensation to the family of the deceased. In fact, it is by law that the State is responsible for damage caused by illegal acts of its agents, in the exercise of their functions, without prejudice to the right of recourse,” the CDD statement reads.

Lusa contacted the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, who promised to comment in due course.
