Mozambique’s newborn registration rate has risen to 71.9%, the country’s permanent representative at the United Nations office in Geneva has said, noting that children’s rights are a priority for the Mozambican government.
According to a report assessing the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Mozambique, the country needs to “improve the registration of newborns and prioritise pre-school education.”
UN experts also “expressed concern about the small number of social workers, which could undermine the implementation of child rights legislation.”
In his reply, Mozambique’s permanent representative in Geneva, Amadeu Paulo Samuel da Conceição, explained that, since the publication of the report, the number of people with access to birth register had risen by 4.7 million, increasing the registration rate to 71.9%.
Amadeu Conceição stressed that registration was a priority for the Mozambican government, adding that the executive was taking into account all aspects that might hinder access to registration, including cultural barriers.
