File: Former president Jacob Zuma was yet to submit his signed resignation letter to Parliament, National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete confirmed this morning.
While Jacob Zuma’s voluntary resignation after his ANC recall means Parliament will no longer have to debate a motion of no confidence, there is still the matter of making official the appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa as the president of the republic.
Former president Jacob Zuma was yet to submit his signed resignation letter to Parliament as required, National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete confirmed this morning.
She said the letter had been written and only needed to be signed.
Mbete further revealed she was in communication with Pretoria.
It was further revealed that Parliament will on Thursday elect a new president and that Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng will be available for the swearing in ceremony this afternoon.
“The office of the chief justice has made itself available today to officiate in the business of electing a new president,” ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu told the meeting.
Zuma resigned from office late Wednesday, preventing a motion of no confidence in him, after being recalled by the ANC earlier in the week.
