Maputo’s old fish market closes on Saturday and hands over the baton to new facilities in Maputo’s Marginal Avenue geared for the sale of seafood and new home to the city’s renowned seafood restaurants.
According to a municipal council source, the allocation of stalls and kiosks to sellers in the new facilities coming was completed a few days ago, and services are currently being transferred to the new facility for a Friday opening deadline.
The new facilities will have about 40 kiosks and 100 stalls with equipment such as storage freezers, ice making machines and space for preparing fish and handling waste.
According to Lurdes Cuinica, deputy head of the fish market, a list of seafood sellers and restaurants in the old market was made so that the new facility could be built based on the number of operators.
Kiosks were built to accommodate vendors depending on the dimensions of the spaces occupied in the old market.
“The stall and kiosk distribution process is going as the city council planned. We are waiting for it to finish in order to start activities in the new market, but there is still no clarity about how effectively it will work,” said Cuinica.
Some vendors interviewed by Notícias said they were unhappy with the distribution process, pointing to a lack of transparency and some operators having no room to work at the new facility.
Seafood seller Manuel Almeida complained that the municipality was not so much transferring as choosing some vendors to occupy stalls and kiosks in the new market.
“We are not satisfied with the allocation procedure because some of our colleagues do not have space to operate in the new market. It seems that working will be difficult because we will be obliged to weigh and pay for the product before we put it on sale,” said Almeida.
