The trial phase of the new identity card started on January 28. The document, which is already being issued in Maputo, Matola, and all provincial capitals, has better security, with crucial information stored on a chip embedded within the actual card.
The front of the card has barely changed, but besides having another colour, invisible security mechanisms to make falsification more difficult have been incorporated. On the back, a change in the area shaded by the chip which stores the information is apparent.
The new document will be introduced gradually and issued as old ID cards expire.
Although the card might look new, the requirements and fees for getting one remain the same – although the receipt on acquiring one has changed and includes, for example, the amount paid.
The new ID card issuing platform is of German origin, the government having terminated its arrangement with the previous provider. The new cards are expected to begin circulating next week.
