Mozambique’s Minister of National Defence, Cristóvão Chume, has appealed in Maputo to the new defence attachés accredited in Mozambique to unite their traditional and historical relationships of friendship and cooperation to face the enormous challenges in their own countries and in Mozambique, a communiqué from the Ministry of National Defence reads.
Cristovao Chume was speaking during the 25th Annual Meeting of Defence Attachés on Friday, October 20, 2023, where he highlighted terrorism, organised transnational crime, crimes of a cyber nature and extreme weather events as among the evils that affect Mozambique and other countries.
According to the leader of the Mozambican defence sector, the new attachés must commit themselves to anticipating threats that could put the security of the Mozambican state at risk and disrupt the socio-economic well-being of the populations.
And for this objective to be achieved, dialogue, one of the principles that Mozambique has been applying in its foreign policy and a condiment to deal with the challenges of international peace and security, Chume recommended the same to newly accredited attachés in the country, to serve as a basis of bilateral relations between Mozambique and the countries involved in this mission.
It should be noted that the country, in addition to multilateral support, receives bilateral support, which demonstrates that the engagement is global, aiming to combat terrorism in Mozambique. And as a result, the return of the population to the areas previously occupied by terrorists in Cabo Delgado is true, in which a multidimensional and proactive response from the Defence and Security Forces is prioritised, in order to comfort the population and encourage them to follow a normal life, reunifying their families and recovering from the trauma of violence.
Prior to the meeting, the Minister of National Defence led the accreditation ceremony for eight new defence attachés: Colonel Hassan Chala, Defence Attaché of the Republic of Kenya; Colonel Omolewa Onileowo, from Nigeria; Colonel Jeannique Debrabdere, Defence Attaché of the Kingdom of Belgium; Colonel Pedro António Martinez Rodriguez de Lema, Defence Attaché of the Kingdom of Spain; Colonel Alistair Green, Defence Attaché of the United Kingdom; Colonel Carsten Meinhard Holscher, Defence Attaché of the Federal Republic of Germany; Colonel Vinicius Lacerdas Vasquez, Defence Attaché of the Federative Republic of Brazil; and Colonel Atul Sapahia, Defence Attaché of the Republic of India.
