The governor of the western Mozambican province of Tete, Paulo Auade, on Wednesday delivered a new ambulance for the district of Doa.
Since last year, the district’s patients have been without transport after the previous ambulance was wrecked whilst attempting to cross a swollen river.
During the handing over ceremony, Auade warned “this ambulance should be used properly. Let us not use it for transporting goats and firewood as has happened elsewhere. This ambulance was acquired by the government to transport the sick and save lives”.
Local people attending the ceremony thanked the government for its actions. One resident, Joao Razao, said “we are happy. We were previously in a bad situation because the sick had to be transported in open vans, and at times we had to depend on the neighbouring district of Mutarara”.
The head of the provincial public health department, Alex Bertil, told journalists that, with this new ambulance, the province of Tete now has 34 operational units with another ten awaiting repairs. Bertil lamented that 34 ambulances are not enough to cover the province which has 135 health units. He explained, “the norm is that each hospital has an ambulance to guarantee it can evacuate the sick in good time”.
He added, “we still need more ambulances. But we know that the government is gradually finding a solution to this problem and we are pleased that it has assigned us a unit for the people of Doa”.
