Mozambique: Rwanda Defence Force gives bicycles to local leaders in Mocímboa da Praia
Lusa / Filipe Nyusi, president of Mozambique
President Filipe Nyusi dismissed the commander of the Air Force, Luis Raul Dique Massimaculo by presidential decree but has not as yet indicated who is to replace him.
Massimaculo was commander of the Mozambican Air Force for eight years, after replacing José Beca Chagua who moved into the reserve in 2008.
After several years with almost no aircraft, due to the reluctance by fund donors to accept investments in the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM), as the understanding was that the country should focus on reconstruction and development after the 16-year civil war which ended in 1992, the Mozambican government has more recently tried to equip its military aviation, mainly through the purchase of previously owned and discontinued craft.
After the country’s independence in 1975, Mozambique’s Air Force chiefly used planes from the former communist Eastern bloc, including Russia, by virtue of the strong ties that Mozambique had with that country.
