South Africa: Alleged kidnapping mastermind from Mozambique, Esmael Nangy, is missing - Watch
The government of central Mozambican province of Zambezia has found at least 290 civil servants holders of fake certificates who were working in a number of state institutions, most of whom in the education sector .
These figures are contained in a report presented on Monday to the Commission for Public Administration and local Government of the Assembly of the Republic, the Mozambican Parliament, which visited the province to assess the level of implementation of the Zambezia Social and Economic Plan for 2018.
Most fake certificates were on psycho-pedagogical education, allegedly obtained at some teacher training centres in the neighbouring provinces of Nampula and Sofala, according to permanent secretary for Zambezi province, Elisa Somane.
She explained that some of the civil servants have already been indicted, while others are still fugitive to avoid justice.
Somane, who was unable to disclose the extent of the damage caused to the state, said that work is under way to verify the authenticity of all certificates as a means to discourage similar cases in the future.
Lucília Hama, head of the parliamentary commission, encouraged the local government to be more proactive and to expose all those involved in illicit activities and bring them to justice.
“Fortunately, we note with satisfaction the effort of the provincial government to verify the authenticity of certificates not only in the education sector, but in all public service”, she said.
“What quality of teaching would we expect from a teacher who holds a fake certificate?” questioned Lucília Hama.
The commission also worked over seven days in the districts of Pebane, Mocuba and Lugela.
