South32 to place Mozal under care and maintenance in 2026; sees $372 million impairment
The gas network in the north of Inhambane covers about 350 kilometres. It was the first gas distribution system in Mozambique and since 1992 has provided energy for residential, commercial, and industrial use. The Inhambane expansion project has cost in total 4.1 million dollars of which 1.8 million has been provided by ENH through CMH.
Mozambique’s publicly owned National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) has completed the latest phase of the expansion of the natural gas network in the southern province of Inhambane.
According to a press release from ENH, the work that began in October has connected 260 new residential properties, taking the total number of homes linked to the gas network to 1,793. Most of the supply is in the districts of Vilankulo, Inhassoro, and Govuro.
This fourth phase of the expansion cost 340,000 US dollars which was funded through ENH’s affiliate Mozambican Hydrocarbon Company (CMH).
The representative of ENH in Vilankulo, Dauto Rogunate, was pleased with how the outcome of the expansion. He explained that “we were able to conclude the work a week earlier than planned, which shows the commitment of our teams on the ground. In addition, we were able to make 260 connections which is ten more than expected”. He added that 164 of the gas connections were in Vilankulo, 56 in Inhassoro, and 40 in Govuro. All of these connections have been completed and the residents are now using gas.
According to ENH chairperson Omar Mitha, the completion of this project is an important step in in the company’s efforts to expand the piped natural gas network to benefit Mozambicans. He stressed that this will help families to save money as the gas is cheaper than coal, firewood, and electricity. Mitha also noted that “apart from this, natural gas is cleaner and helps preserve the environment”.

In a similar project, ENH has been working in partnership with the South Korean company Kogas to build a gas distribution network in the capital city Maputo and the district of Marracuene.
The primary distribution network has been in place since 2014, but there are currently just twenty commercial and industrial customers. However, a pilot expansion scheme is near completion which will link fifty families in the Aeroporto A neighbourhood to the network.
The gas for both projects comes from the Pande and Temane fields in Inhambane, which are operated by the South African petro-chemical giant, Sasol.
