Mozambique: Government investigates attack on Russian oceanographic vessel off Cabo Delgado
The Deputy Minister of National Defence, Patrício José, yesterday denounced attempts from the exterior to manipulate the public and denigrate the government of Mozambique and its achievements.
Speaking in Maputo at a seminar about patriotic education work in the defence sector, José said that, today, most of the phenomena affecting the internal security of Mozambique were transnational in nature, and characterised by certain powers pursuing their own political and economic interests, by manipulating the minds of off-guard Mozambican citizens.
According to Patrício José, this leads to action by pressure groups designed to denigrate and discredit the government. To achieve this goal, some media, he said, are funded from abroad to spread false messages that divert citizens’ attention.
“This situation, whose mentors are faceless, is aimed at manipulating the political will of the nation in order to induce them to rise up against their government, thus making the political and economic situation difficult and diffuse,” he said.
Patricio José said the government was fully aware that the armed defence forces of Mozambique, FADM, the moral backbone of society, never had and never would abdicate the proper performance of its tasks, which was why moral, patriotic education should remain a priority in the overall preparation of soldiers.
In this context, special attention should be given to the training of patriotic civil educators, especially in military units, considered as centres of educational and patriotic work.
The Deputy Minister of Defence said that a FADM civic-patriotic educator, must be a military who should take the initiative, be dedicated to the work and someone who gives good advice, a good communicator and promoter of noble values, supportive, loyal, honest, courageous, patriotic and with a sense of mission. In the noble and difficult task of the civic and patriotic educator, according to Patricio José, the hardest thing is to set an example; to think, act and live fulfilling the dictates of the constitution and all laws and regulations, and to be a role model for young people to emulate.
He noted that in a world where expertise has become a country’s main asset, the educator’s activity becomes one of the main activities of any state, in particular for the defence sector, the guarantor of last resort of the coercive power of a sovereign nation.
The Deputy Minister of National Defence indicated that only uninterrupted civic-patriotic education work, implemented within all organs, commands and military units, could achieve the highest patriotic and ethical values, and that duty-based, professional pride that constitutes the beacon of the institution.
Patriotic education in the military is a powerful weapon against competing models which try to disrupt the cohesion within the masses, and improves the corporation’s self-awareness.
Several themes are being presented and discussed at the seminar, which ends today. Yesterday, participants addressed civic and patriotic education between 1964 and 1992, current activities and the impact of information and communication technologies in the defence forces, their relation to the media and the importance of the press in promoting the image of Mozambique’s armed forces.
