The National Inspection of Economic Activities, INAE, in Nampula says it has received many complaints from consumers about a cooking oil scam involving several commercial establishments.
In a recent operation carried out in coordination with the police, some sealed containers in one establishment were found to contain waste water. The trader, identified only as Muhamade, said he was unable to explain the situation.
“I bought 30 large and 30 small buckets [of cooking oil]. Last week someone came and said he had [bought] a bucket of water. I said that I would not refund him, because I thought the buyer had himself switched [the content of the bucket]. It happened again today,” the merchant related.
INAE inspectors went to the dealer where the stock was purchased and opened some containers, but the problem was not in evidence there.
However, the owner, who did not want to record an interview, said that she had suffered from the same scam in the past, but that such situations had not been registered since 2019.
“We are still carrying out an investigation. We started at the agent’s store and where he acquired it, but without drawing any conclusion. We will continue to investigate until we get to the bottom of this problem,” the INAE’s Lacerda Cândido da Silva promised.
The trader in question was taken to the police station, but later released. The police, as well as the INAE, are still investigating.
