Eight people were killed in a road accident at EN8 late yesterday, more specifically in the Rex area of Nampula city, when a tipper truck heading north on the Nampula-Nacala route crashed violently on the side of a ‘Chapa’ passenger mini-bus that went in the opposite direction, coming from the administrative post of Anchilo.
Data obtained by Noticias, moments after the accident, report that five people died at the scene of the accident and the remaining three at the Central Hospital of Nampula, where they were sent to. Among the dead is the ‘Chapa’ driver, reports Rádio Moçambique, adding that the driver of the truck fled the accident scene and is currently at large.
Dozens of other passengers contracted serious and minor injuries and were promptly removed to Nampula Central Hospital.
The director of the Emergency rooms at Nampula Central Hospital said that the wounded are being taken care of. “The emergency unit received a total of 14 patients who remain under observation, of whom three are currently in a serious condition and unconscious. Still, we can also confirm the eight deaths, ” said Frederico Sebastião, cited by Rádio Moçambique.
Noticias reports that when ts team left the crash scene, locals were trying to remove some people still trapped in the rubble of ‘Chapa’.
The excessive speed of the truck, allied to a mechanical failure, are indicated as the causes of the accident.
