Mozambique: Anarchy in semi-public transport, “chapas”, seems to be far from over

Between 40 and 50 young people are caught daily in some areas of Nampula province, trying to join the ranks of terrorists who have been active mainly in neighbouring Cabo Delgado province since 2017.
The information was provided on Thursday (June 22) by the Provincial Commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), in Nampula province, António Bashir, at the 24th Session of the Observatory of the Development of Nampula Province.
In September 2022, terrorists invaded the district of Memba in Nampula, there attacking Chipene Mission in Nacala diocese, burning houses and murdering 84-year-old Sister Maria de Coppi, a Venetian who had lived in Mozambique since 1963.
“When everything seems to be calm, there are still people who are dedicated to enticing young people to join terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado,” Bashir said, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
“We are having a huge problem. Every day, we have 40 to 50 young people who are sent back from the recruiting ranks in Cabo Delgado. We are worried, and today, for example, I received the message that 49 young people were found on the islands of Cabo Delgado, saying that they were going fishing,” the commander told the radio broadcaster. “Is it possible that this is really true?”
Bashir therefore argues that there is a need to educate society, especially young people, so that they do not fall into the hands of terrorists.
“Terrorism still continues; we have to redouble our security efforts,” he underlined.
