Found at last: Nampula Mayor’s stolen cellphone – Police

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) has just recovered the Nampula mayor’s cellphone, whichmade national headlines when it was stolen on 23 July during mass at the local Cathedral.

The mobile phone returned to the hands of the rightful owner last week, after it went missing for more than a month. Its recovery resulted from an operative and investigative work carried out by the Police in Nampula, in response to the complaint filed by mayor Mahamudo Amurane in the city’s 1st Police Station.

Proceedings, in collaboration with the incumbent operators in the country, allowed the location of the cell phone which, meanwhile, was in possession of a citizen of Asian origin living in the city of Nampula.

At the time, and according to Diário de Moçambique, the citizen would have told authorities that he had purchased the cell phone from an unidentified Mozambican citizen.

The Police contacted Mayor Amurane who, in the enclosure of the 1st Station and from the hands of the high-ranking official in attendance, he would receive his cell phone back.

After learning of the recovery of Mahamudo Amurane’s cell phone, the newspaper contacted the parish priest of the Cathedral of Nampula, Bernardo António, who said that he had not been informed of this development.

Father Bernardo António was surprised, but said that he believed that just as he had done on the occasion of the theft, the mayor of the third largest Mozambican city will speak about this news in a timely manner so that the church takes note of the recovery of the cell phone.

Father Bernardo António said during the Mass on August 7 that the church was was wounded by this unusual occurrence, appealing to the conscience of whoever had taken the phone to return it to the owner.
