The president of Nampula City Council, Mahamudo Amurane, was murdered yesterday evening at his home in Nampula’s Muhala Expansão neighbourhood by individuals unknown and still at large.
Municipal councillor Assane Raja said Amurane’s death was confirmed by the city’s Central Hospital at around 7:00 p.m.
According to Raja, Amurane’s last public act was the depositing of a wreath at the monument in Heroes Square in Nampula yesterday morning and a speech alluding to the signing of the Rome Peace Agreements.
“He presented this morning a message to the people of Nampula, where he gave a speech for peace,” Raja said.
The death of the mayor from gunshot injuries was confirmed by Nampula Central Hospital.
Amurane became mayor of Nampula at the municipal elections of 2013, where he stood for the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM).
A few months ago, Amurane found himself on a collision course with his party’s leadership, and later announced that he was leaving the party and would stand in next year’s elections at the head of a new political formation.
The deceased lost his life a year and six days before the end of his term.
His death opens a vacancy in the municipality which by law must be temporarily filled by the president of the Municipal Assembly until interim elections are held.
Amurane was born in Nampula on June 2, 1973, and held a degree in Business Administration from the Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Prior to becoming mayor, he worked as an independent consultant in the provision of services in the area of planning, budgeting, execution, monitoring, evaluation and public sector management processes.
Between 2007 and 2012, Amurane served as financial adviser to the Sofala provincial directorate of Education and Culture.
