Nampula: Man detained in possession of 77 identity cards

A man by the name of Carlos Assane found in possession of 77 identity cards has been arrested in Nampula.

Nine of the cards were from Mossuril, 41 from Memba and 27 from Nacala-a-Velha district.

Also in his possession were 55 identity card receipts issued by the District Identification Services of Mossuril, Nacala-Velha and Memba districts in Nampula province.

Speaking yesterday at a press conference, National Directorate for Civil Identification (DIC) spokesman Alberto Sumbane said that, in addition to the above documents, 16 filled-in birth certificates supposedly issued by Mossuril civil registry and a birth certificate supposedly issued by the Civil Registry of Mozambique were also recovered.

Sumbane said that the heads of the DIC district offices in Mossuril, Nacala-a-Velha and Memba are now subject to disciplinary proceedings to assess their possible involvement in the case, not ruling out criminal responsibility if there any evidence in that regard.
