The Nampula government in its fifth ordinary session on Friday approved changes in inter-district passenger transport tariffs, but without setting a date for implementation.
Fares will rise from the previous one metical per kilometre to 1.25 meticais.
Government spokesman Ernesto Zacarias explained that a passenger travelling from Nampula to Memba would pay 313 meticais, against the current 250 meticais. The 20 kilometres between Nampula to Maratane will cost 25 meticais, against the current 20 meticais.
“The price adjustment is a combined decision of the carriers association, ASTRA, and the provincial government, in the light of the new fuel prices and the wear and tear on vehicles due to the condition of the roads” Zacarias said.
Zacarias said that the fare rise would come into effect in consultation with the Nampula Association of Road Transporters and after it had been explained to the public.
