The Governor of Nampula Province, Manuel Rodrigues Alberto, on Tuesday (29 November) inaugurated five classrooms, an administrative block and two toilets at Quiriquige primary school in Angoche district, built, as part of its social responsibility programme, by Haiyu Mozambique Mining, a company exploiting the Sangage heavy sands.
Governor Rodrigues said that the development of human and social capital was one of the government’s main priorities, which is why it responded positively to the request of the population of Quiriquige.
The governor appealed to parents and guardians and the school community to remain vigilant against the enemies of development, so as to preserve the infrastructure being handed over.
Governor Rodrigues said that he did not want to hear about pupils dropping out of school, whether for reason of premature marriages, domestic work or any other activity detrimental to the progress of children.
For Manuel Rodrigues, there are those who don’t like good things – the enemies of good governance, capable of vandalising a beautiful school, the fruit of government, removing the doors and windows, zinc sheets and even furniture.
The government official said, furthermore, that the classroom capacity must be fully used. Children must go to school, for, as we know, he said,’ primary education is the nursery of secondary education”. The classrooms and desks would serve equally the boys and girls of tomorrow, and it must be assumed that future generations would use them as well.
Manuel Rodrigues exhorted the school management to use correctly the Direct Support funds made available by the government to ensure the maintenance of infrastructure, with running water and hygiene material so that the establishment does not become a focus of Covid-19 contamination.
The infrastructure has been built to withstand cyclonic events, in response to the climate changes recently experienced in Mozambique, especially in Nampula. At an estimated cost of around seven million meticais, it will benefit a total of 515 students from the three surrounding communities, of which 265 were female.
At the same ceremony, Manuel Rodrigues also delivered 24 motorcycles and a check for 93,000 meticais to members of the community liaison council, the body that had successfully built a bridge between the population, the government and the mining company.
Before inaugurating the school, the Governor of Nampula mingled with youngsters gathering at Angoche’s Youth Square to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Mozambican Youth Organization (OJM).
