Mozambique: New FADM Deputy Chief of Staff takes office

The National Election Commission (CNE) yesterday released in Maputo the results of the by-elections held in Nampula last Wednesday, after requalifying a total of 216 votes initially considered invalid after the ballot.
The electoral body carried out the process of requalification of the votes after it received the collection of the by-election vote yesterday morning. However, the requalification changed the results arrived at by the District Election Commission (CDE), which is responsible for conducting the process at the provincial level, very little.
After the requalification of votes previously considered invalid, the results, of the total of 73,852 votes cast, are as follows:
After the result of the CNE process, it remains the case that none of the candidates reach the 50 percent of votes necessary to become the winner of the election, and the possibility of holding a second round is open. First, however, the results must be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council, a prominent body in constitutional matters and electoral law. The government then has 30 days to announce, on the recommendation of the CNE, the date of a possible second round.
The results indicate that, of the 296,590 registered voters in the municipality, only 73,852 votes were cast in the polls, a turnout of only 24.9 percent.
