Nacala-Porto, in Nampula province, today hosts Mozambique’s main World Water Day ceremonies, in an event intended to promote reflection on communities’ use of this vital resource.
In Mozambique, the date is celebrated under the motto “Occupy the Soil – Preserving Waterways”, which draws attention to the need not to erect infrastructure in waterways.
A press release from the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources indicates that the celebrations will be repeated in all provincial capitals.
The choice of Nacala to host the central ceremonies is justified by the fact that the port city perennially has to deal with erosion problems caused by disorderly occupation of fragile environments.
Still on the same subject, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Higher and Technical-Professional Education is holding a lecture entitled “Natural solutions for water in the Manhiça district of Maputo province”.
Inhambane meanwhile is investing in the supply of water to its population, with 50 new sources scheduled to come online later in the year.
