With the support of Nacala Logistics, the more than 400,000 inhabitants of the Monapo district in Nampula have since Monday enjoyed the benefit of a pedestrian and motorcycle bridge between Monapo and Monapo-Rio.
The investment, worth around US$5 million, gives the population of Monapo a safe access route between two important locations in the district, allowing for greater local development.
The rehabilitation consisted mainly in replacing the deck and entire metallic structure. The bridge now has signage and concrete footings throughout and has been repainted.
Nacala Logistics believes that the rehabilitation will considerably reduce risk to the population, who often made inappropriate use of the railway bridge that crosses the region.
According to the Director of Nacala Logistics, Marcos Presoti, the company is happy with the result of its investment and says it will continue to invest in the well-being of the people living along the corridor.
“We want to continue to be united with the people, investing in local development and in their well-being. Our biggest concern was the imminent risk of accidents, so, today, we are happy,” Nacala Logistics administrator Marcos Presoti said. “Delivering the rehabilitated bridge offers the population a safe means of crossing.”
Monapo District Administrator Américo Adamugy thanked Nacala Logistics for yet another investment in the region, and highlighted the importance of the infrastructure for Monapo residents, saying that the bridge would shorten journeys for both people and goods. “The rehabilitation of the bridge is undoubtedly an asset for the residents of Monapo,” he said.
Monapo residents expressed their satisfaction at being able to use the bridge again, which had been sorely missed.
“The population has been waiting for the rehabilitation of the bridge for a long time,” Monapo resident Arlindo José said, thanking Nacala Logistics giving them back a safe way of getting about. “Before, we ran many risks crossing the railroad tracks. Now, our life has changed for the better. The responsibility for preserving the bridge is now ours,” José said.
Emílio Tseco, another Monapo resident, praised the Nacala Logistics-financed project, an opinion shared by local community leader, Jaime Arlindo.
“We thank Nacala Logistics for improving our bridge. We are very pleased because this infrastructure is very important to us,” Arlindo said.
Nacala Logistics has been making important mobility and transportation infrastructure improvements all along the corridor, including footbridges and level crossings and other infrastructure enabling people and trains to coexist safely.
Nacala Logistics has built other structures similar to the one delivered this week in Monapo, including two road bridges, a railway bridge, a pedestrian bridge and a bridge for motorcyclists.
These actions exemplify Nacala Logistics’ values, summarised as “Love for Life and Respect for Communities”.
