Malawi President Mutharika whose fall was highlighted on social media and became an issue of debate has not hidden his displeasure with Malawians on Facebook and Twitter among other social media.

Speaking at the Consecration of Rev Father George Tambala as Bishop of Zomba Diocese, President Mutharika said that the country had become reliant on social media which was spreading lies.

Mutharika spent over half of his brief speech on the way people like you are handling themselves on social media.

“I heard the story of the banker who was said to have killed his wife and it was just a lie,” said Mutharika.

Meanwhile a social commentator has said that Mutharika’s remarks signal the government’s wishes to start regulating social media.

“The fact that Mutharika picked on social media of all the problems the country has tells a lot about what his government thinks of the social media,” commentator Emily Luwani said to Malawi24.

Luwani said that the DPP led government had already hinted that it was unhappy with the social media and this was Mutharika sending a warning to Malawians.

“The President could have talked about the senseless killings people are doing to each other in the country, but he settled for Facebook, that tells more of what his party is plotting against Malawians,” she said.

Luwani said that the government might contemplate a ban or just pass some tough laws.
